Brooklyn’s Rev. Al Sharpton and Police Commissioner Announce Gun Buyback Program
Rev. Al Sharpton and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced a new gun buyback program today, according to The New York Daily News. The Gun Stop program, which will offer a $1,000 reward to those who anonymously call the NYPD to inform them of the location of an illegal firearm, aims to remove deadly arms off city streets.
Sharpton, who was born in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, has often clashed with Kelly on issues but said today that the pair has to get beyond their differences in politics to preserve their lives. Police Commissioner Kelly said that gun violence was a scourge of the black community last year and that 73 percent of all shooting victims were black.
